My son got a giant Hershey’s kiss for Christmas. It’s loomed large in his mind ever since he got it. The big question was WHEN would he get to eat it. I can relate to his passion for chocolate, not only because I’ve experienced a similar passion for it, but also because I’ve had a longing for things that have become addictive in nature for me: material things, time on the computer, time on the phone, time for hobbies and on and on. I have been praying that God would give me something good to chew on and He has. Romans 8:5 says "Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." What I learned in those psychology courses was right! Our thoughts affect our feelings which in turn motivates our behavior. If, like my son, I keep thinking about whatever is chocolate to me at the time, I will find myself eating a lot of it. But if I think about whatever is excellent and lovely and praiseworthy (not that chocolate isn’t – lol), I will find myself living according to what the Spirit desires — which is sweet freedom!
